Ticket from the 1962 World Figure Skating Championships in Prague

The return of the World Figure Skating Championships to Prague continues a legacy that spans more than eight decades. The city first hosted the World Championships for women in 1939 - the last Worlds held before World War II. The city was set to host again in 1961, but the Championships were cancelled following the tragic Sabena Flight 548 crash. The World Championships ultimately returned to Prague in 1962. It was an unforgettable competition that included Donald Jackson landing the first triple Lutz in World Championship history and becoming Canada’s first World Champion in the men's event. That same year, Maria and Otto Jelinek captured the pairs title for Canada after defecting from behind the Iron Curtain, adding a powerful human story to the event. Prague hosted again in 1993, where Canada's Kurt Browning won his fourth world title and Oksana Baiul made history as the first skater from Ukraine to win a World title.
